Your autogate stops working — and suddenly your car is blocked in the driveway, or worse, your home is left unsecured. It's a frustrating situation, but most autogate problems have straightforward causes. Before you call for professional autogate repair in Singapore, run through this checklist. You might be able to resolve the issue yourself in minutes.

1. Dead or Weak Remote Control Battery

This is the most common reason an autogate appears to stop working. The remote sends a radio signal to the gate motor, and a weak battery means the signal doesn't reach.

•      Replace the battery in your remote (usually a CR2032 coin cell).

•      Test the remote from a closer distance first. If it works nearby but not from the road, the battery is the issue.

•      If you have a spare remote and it works, the original remote may need reprogramming or replacement.

2. Power Supply Interruption

Your autogate motor runs on electricity. A tripped circuit breaker, a blown fuse, or a power disruption can cut power to the entire system.

•      Check your home's circuit breaker panel and reset any tripped breakers.

•      Inspect the power supply to the motor control box.

•      If power supply is fine but the motor still won't run, the issue may lie deeper — this is when professional autogate repair becomes necessary.

3. Obstruction in the Gate Path

Modern autogates have obstacle detection sensors. If something is blocking the gate's path — a stray stone, debris, or a misaligned sensor — the system will refuse to operate as a safety measure.

•      Clear the gate path of any objects.

•      Check that the photocell sensors (infrared beam sensors) on both sides of the gate are aligned and clean.

•      Wipe the sensor lenses with a dry cloth. Dust and moisture are common culprits in Singapore's humidity.

4. Limit Switch Malfunction

Limit switches tell the motor when the gate has fully opened or closed. If these become misaligned or damaged, the gate may stop mid-way, reverse unexpectedly, or not respond at all.

•      This is harder to diagnose without technical knowledge.

•      If the gate opens partially and stops, or reverses without reason, a limit switch issue is likely.

•      We recommend contacting a licensed autogate repair technician to adjust or replace the switch safely.

5. Motor Overheating or Thermal Cutout

If your gate has been operated frequently in a short period — for example, during a function or event at your home — the motor may overheat and trigger an automatic thermal cutout to protect itself.

•      Allow the motor to cool down for 20–30 minutes.

•      Try operating the gate again after it has cooled.

•      If overheating is a recurring issue, the motor may be undersized for your usage pattern and should be reviewed.

6. Damaged or Worn Gate Track (Sliding Gates)

For sliding autogates, a worn, bent, or obstructed floor track can cause the gate to jam, grind, or stop moving altogether.

•      Inspect the track for visible damage, warping, or built-up debris.

•      Clean the track thoroughly and check the guide rollers at the bottom of the gate.

•      Bent or cracked tracks will need professional replacement — continuing to operate on a damaged track can damage the motor.

7. Control Board or Wiring Fault

The control board is the brain of your autogate system. Faults here — caused by power surges, water ingress, or age — can produce erratic behaviour: the gate may open but not close, respond slowly, or not respond at all. Wiring issues, particularly in older installations, can also cause similar symptoms.

This is one situation where DIY troubleshooting is not advisable. Electrical faults require a qualified autogate repair technician to diagnose safely. Attempting to fix control board or wiring issues without expertise can damage the system further or create safety hazards.
